Guinness Ghana champions ‘Progressive Portrayal’ of women in media, advertising and entertainment industry.Progressive Portrayal is an initiative by Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC under Diageo company. to work with its partners to be a driving force in its effort to accelerate and transform the advertising industry to be more representative, progressive and equal.It focuses on the importance of diversity in the advertising industry and partnerships to support more progressive gender portrayal in content. The summit forms part of Guinness Ghana’s initiative to drive conversations around inclusion and diversity and push the narrative of a more representative, progressive and equal portrayal of women in advertising and media

The maiden discussion in the initiative by Guinness featured Suzanne Butah, Legal Director of Guinness Ghana, Akua Owusu-Nartey, Regional MD Ogilvy Africa, Kinorah Awini, CEO of Telande World, Lydia Forson, Award winning actress and Russel Eni, MD and Creative Director,Insel Communications . It was moderated by Nana Aba Anamoah, General Manager of GHone TV.

(Present at the University 0f Ghana edition of the campus tour  were AMA PRATT,FOUNDER,OBAASIMA SUMMIT,MADAM YAA AMOAH-OWUSU,DR YVONNE AGBETSOAMEDO,DEPUTY SENIOR TUTOR,MENSAH SARBAH HALL,UNIVERSITY OF GHANA AND THE RENOWNED ACTRESS,ENTREPRENEUR,AND MEDIA PERSONALITY NAA ASHORKOR MENSAH-DOKU.)

The series of conversations which started at UPSA had inclusive for other schools : on the tour for the campus edition namely  University Of Ghana ,University Of Development Studies, ,University of Education -Winneba and Ghana Institute of Journalism.



Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC (GGBPLC) , in collaboration with Obaasima  organized this summit event  in connection with its Progressive Portrayal initiative universities dubbed the Campus Tour and crowning at the Tang palace Hotel. The summit earlier held at  Dungu campus centred around the theme: ‘Progressive Portrayal of women” and convened over 200 students of UDS to join the insightful and stimulating conversation.

The event on Fiday ,had Kate Asare start us off with the singing of the National Anthem with performances from Ewura the poet and Camidoh.

Speaking to the media , Abena Chrappah, Media and Digital Manager, Guinness Ghana said in their bid to promote inclusive environments and shape market leading policies, Guinness Ghana will continue to lead and extend the conversation beyond corporate Ghana to other crucial members of the society.



“We hope to truly encourage a truly progressive depiction and portrayal of women in all facets of our society especially in advertising. This goes a long way to deepen our commitment to ensuring inclusion and diversity which is our core mandate at Guinness Ghana.”

“It was out of this that the partnership with Guinness Ghana for this year’s activities was birthed. Everything just fell into place and we are now leveraging on a conversation that has already been sparked by Guinness Ghana to reach key people such as students who also play a critical role in the progressive portrayal of women.”

 

Popular media personality, Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku, has urged women to rise up and change the negative perception society has created about them as she also shared some few comments and insights about the summit and the solid backing of the initiative.She adds that women must hold the fort in rewriting the narrative on feminist stereotypes.The award-winning actress remarked that:

 


“We are all responsible to change the narrative about the portrayal of women in the media. It is not all bad, but there is so much more we can do…the onus is on us individually to reflect and change where we need to change ‘ourselves’, so that collectively we will see change and not expect that some superpower would change things around for us. It is our individual responsibility.”

On the Night ,various people from all walks of life were seen with so much enthusiasm for the event and had high hopes for it as well.Warmly,received they proceeded to the much awaited event .On the guest seats were Angela Dwamena ,Kate Addo ,Helene Weesie,Prof. Naana Jane Opoku (a Full Professor of Literature.), Kwesi Pratt Jnr (Managing Editor of Insight Newspaper and A journalist),Kokui Selormey (Media personality,Personality,Presenter,broadcast jornalist,producer,event host,singer and an entrepreneur), Ama Pratt.

Speaking at the event, Héléne Weesie, Guinness Ghana Managing Director, said “the fact that this year’s Obaasima summit is co-organised by Guinness Ghana, is a sign of the strides we are making in our society when it comes to gender-based activities.

“A few years ago, many brands may not have bought into such an initiative. However, it is now clear that the fight for inclusion and diversity is everyone’s responsibility – men, women, media, government, activists, companies, brands and people from all walks of our society.”



At its conclusion amidst various talks and questions ,it clearly showed that this great initiative was and has been a pivotal issue which many expressed that be a sooner than later reality and the future to come soon to curb the negative and weak representation of women. Coherently the organizers were applauded and partners /sponsors like Guinness Ghana Breweries,Verna,Mcberry,Ideal and Milo were highly appreciated and acknowledged and a move to expect more come next year .
